the main is that they are renewable and therefore will never run out. There also clean and clan be put offshore with less maintenance than other power plants e.g. less to run than coal plants.

the negatives of it is that they ‘look ugly’ (which i think is the stupidest reason ever) and that their noisy. the main reason i’d state against them is the fact that the power supply is very irregular and hard to predict and therefore could not be used on its own and would need other plants as well.

The payback period depends on so many things i.e. cost of windmill, realisation per unit sale of electricity, mode of financing, location etc.

So people have different views. Variation is too massive 3 to 8 years.

We have those in Texas. I guess it depends on how close you live to them. At least they are quiet ! We need to use solar energy too. Probably a lot less land needed to “capture” it. There are some windmills out around Galveston. They are actually pretty out there on the beach !

I have an ~18v solar panel and a ~15v wind turbine. Sometimes one generates more voltage than the other. How would I get both of them to charge one ~12v battery? I cannot just connect them in parallel with diodes, because in that case, only the higher voltage source gets used. Is there a special charge controller circuit that will do this?

There are controllers to do this, but they are very expensive. Why not two batteries, one for each generator and a battery ‘change over’ switch’ on the output. When one battery is low switch to the other.

I hope you do not take this the wrong way but you should aim higher than installing or repairing anything. Those jobs are important but if you have a very good understanding of math and science you can do so much more.

For example, we need solar energy to become less costly and more efficient. That means we need advances in the science of solar panels themselves and the batteries that store the energy. So a chemist or a chemical engineer would be working to make more efficient and less costly solar panels. An electrical engineer would be working on designing superior batterys and power capture systems. Even someone like an astrophysicist would study the energy of the sun and work with the chemist to capture that energy in a more efficient manner.

I hope that helps you give some more ideas of what a good job might be and the education required to get it.
