DOES A MOTION SENSOR LIGHT SAVE ENERGY/MONEY? PLEASE HELP!?

My electric bill went up again. They used to be around $50 or so a month. I try to unplug the fan, microwave, toaster, etc. when not in use, shut lights off when not using them, shut the personal off at night, etc. Why is my bill so high? What can I do to reduce it. I try to leave the air off during the day when my husband’s at work and shut it off when I leave the home for a while. My nearly 3 yr old son though will not sleep without his light on and a night light will not work. I try to shut it off and sometimes he sleeps through it and later turns it back on but many times it wakes him up and he turns it back on. I was thinking of a motion sensor light but not sure how much they are and if it would help save some energy (because I am all about being green) and saving some green in these electricity bills. Anyone know if this would save a lot if the light is on most, if not all of the night and some of the morning till he gets up? Please help and thanks so much, I wanna get my bills low again 
I got the spiral ones but not sure about his room-I’ll have to check but the bills are still high
