Q&A: ASIDE FROM THE PR INCENTIVES WHY DO UTILITIES COMPANIES PROVIDE REBATES AND $ INCENTIVES TO SAVE ENERGY?
Sep 21st
Question by Christopher Pflum:
Aside from the PR incentives why do utilities companies provide rebates and $ incentives to save energy?
I was recently posed the question as to why a “Utilities” company would pay incentives to a company that provides an energy reduction service.
At first I thought it had something to do with the deregulation of energy. It would seem that if “Utilities” means the energy producer then they are actually losing money both from giving incentives and from the reduction in energy usage. If “Utilities” mean the energy distributor then the same is true because, in all likelihood, their income is based off of a percentage of what they are transmitting. While public relations explains a small part of this reason, it still does not explain why a company would pay incentives to a third celebration company to essentially reduce their product sales.
I can comprehend if there is an area like California that experiences frequent brown or blackouts, but the energy conservation company exists regardless of market energy demands. So what is the incentive for a company that makes money by selling energy to pay money to a company that essentially reduces there net profits?

WHAT TOTAL SOLAR CELL AREA WOULD YOU NEED TO PROVIDE ENERGY NEEDS? MASTERING PHYSICS PROBLEM?
Aug 3rd
Question by Jokers Finest:
What total solar cell area would you need to provide energy needs? Mastering Physics problem?
Solar cells convert the energy of incoming light to electric energy; a good quality cell operates at an efficiency of 15%. Each person in the United Says uses energy (for lighting, heating, transportation, etc.) at an average rate of 11 kilowatts . Even though sunlight varies with season and time of day, solar energy falls on the United Says at an average intensity of 200 W/m^2.
Assuming you live in an average location, what total solar-cell area would you need to provide all of your energy needs with energy from the sun?

HOW DO I COST-EFFECTIVELY USE SOLAR ENERGY TO PROVIDE LIGHT AT NIGHT?
Jan 28th
i am moving to sierra leone, the poorest country in the world. there will be no electricity where i will be. if i purchase a 12v solar charger and a 12v (we’ll state flourescent) light capable of creating as many lumens as a 60w light bulb, how many hours of light can i provide each night (assuming 14 hours of sunlight)? any additional recommendations for off the grid power are very welcome.
