Question by :
What specific energy source and pollution problem does solar powered energy address/ fix/ replace?
What is the problem that solar energy solves, specifically, like air pollution, etc.

——————————————

Answer by bwamp
solar power could be used for electricity. our electric power stations are fueled mostly on coal so it would lessen the demand of that and reduce the pollution coal produces when used to produce energy. comparing to nuclear power plants, they require a lot of water to remain at optimal temperatures and lets just face it, water is something we already take for granted, you can purchase a bottle of it for a dollar yet a candy bar is more expensive. solar energy can help dramatically but it just requires a lot of money to produce these panels and even at that we need to find ways to make them even more efficient so that it makes a superior investment.

Answer by Jack
well obviously solar power is an alternative-if more people had solar panels for example certain energy plants would close down and there would be less pollution who knows

Answer by adaviel
Looking just at the operation, not construction, of (electric) solar panels, they replace any source of electricity. That might include electricity produced by burning fossil fuels or from nuclear power. The pollution problems from fossil fiuel are various – ash, unburned hydrocarbon, nitrous oxides, sulphur oxides, and carbon dioxide etc.
Unburned hydrocarbons and nitrous oxides are responsible for photochemical smog
Ash and particulates are dirty and can cause cancer and respiratory problems.
Carbon dioxide is responsible for the greenhouse effect and climate change.
Pollution from nuclear planrts includes local thermal pollution, accidental release of radioactive material, and long-term radioactive waste which represents a storage problem

There are also thermal solar panels and plants, which can provide residential heating (replacing fossil fuels or biomass like wood, which generates pollution when burned), and sometimes industrial processes like smelting (replacing other soruces of power)

Right now, we do not have a good way to store electricity overnight or efficiently send it right around the world to the nightside, and we do not have a good portable way to store energy for use in airplanes.

——————————————

Question by senthil k:
How to generate electricity from powered sewing machine, whose motor runs around 2000 rpm?
We’ve 500 powered sewing machines in our factory. Like all the machines running by motor these, sewing machines are also working. My idea is to use motor’s rotation to generate electricity, like wind mill and turbines work. Conversion of elxtrical energy to electricity. Can someone help me how to execute this in most economical way…

——————————————

Answer by Mike
Unfortunately it sounds a lot like you are trying for perpetual motion here – which will not work.

The way that the sewing machines could be made to generate electricity is to attach a magnet to the spinning rotor and place this rotor inside a coil of wire. You would find that current was generated in the wire that could then be used to charge a battery or run an appliance. Google electricity generator for specifics.

However, you cannot get something for nothing. The magnetic field would interact with the current in the wire, opposing the motion of the rotor (making it slower). The law of conservation of energy says that you could not get more energy out of the wire than was being lost by the sewing machine, in fact, due to inefficiencies in electricitry generation, you would get significantly less.

There you go – you could use a sewing machine to generate electricty but the electricity generated would be much less than the extra energy used by the sewing machine with the generator compared to before the generator was attached.

Hope that is clear.

Answer by billrussell42
Won’t work, for the same reason perpetual motion machines do not work, you cannot get energy from nothing.

If it worked, the world would be set for electric power forever, no more oil, no more coal. However, it doesn’t.

Answer by Tariq Masood
The motor is not well identified, but if the motor is permanent run and instantaneous load motor, and you are giving load by pressing clutch of sewing machine, then your motor is working mostly 50% without load, and in this condition you can use your motors fully occupied by using same 95% capacity of generator or dynamo with the shaft of motor and switch the load of generator through clutch lever.
When you run machine, the armature will move without any load, but the time you stop your machine, your generator connect to load. what ever load you apply, but you can never connect all 500 units together for ac supply nor to connect different voltage of dc supply for dc power source, well you search for any equipment to connect the all generated power together.
You can save about more then 80% of your power wastage.

——————————————

Question by Google Yahoo MSN:
What home appliance can be powered by a solar panel?
I do not know anything about where to purchase solar panels. I just want to save on the electric bills.
Thank you all for providing good answers. I am not particularly good with math and engineering. But do you guys think that solar panels could power an airconditioning unit? As far as I know, these consume way too much electricity

——————————————

Answer by byderule
radio,
TV
lights
computers
low voltage kitchen appliances ,like toasters ,mixers ,
Water pumps

and if you have enough panels and enough batteries .probably washing machines ,and micro waves as well.

Answer by tretston
First and foremost, you are speaking about photovoltaic panels. These harness solar energy and convert it to electricity. The downside to these is that they are expensive, even though you will see a massive return on your electric bill in usually 5-7 years. The photovoltaic panels produce DC electricity, so if you want to power your home appliances you will need an inverter that takes DC electricity and converts it to AC (since nearly all home appliances run off of AC). You will also need a battery and an optional but very useful charge controller. The battery stores electricity that is generated from the sun to be used on cloudy days. The charge controller is the brains of the operation and deciphers how much electricity should go to the appliance(s) or the battery.

Answer by Don K
Simple answer.

Anything you can power with your normal household electric can be powered by solar.

So you know what a solar panel is:

A “solar panel” is more then one solar module mounted on a frame to be installed as a single unit into a solar array.

Next question is normally what is a solar module:

A “solar module” is a bunch of solar cells mounted together with a clear front and a white backing.

Solar is something that you install on your home so you do not have to rent electric power from the public utility. It has a massive upfront cost but will pay it’s self and you then own something. Like if you rent a home you end up with nothing but if you purchase a home you pay a huge upfront payment and in the end you own it and can sell it for a profit.

Yes you can run your A/C unit from Solar Electric.

As stated above. Anything you can run from the pubilc utility can be ran from solar. If it is in your home and running from electric right now you can run it from solar.

——————————————

Answer by Ezweb
Found the following YouTube lecture from Arosa Solar Energy Demonstration Lakewood Cheder at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut0988zeA-M you might take some ideas what to state and what not to say.

I see some FAQs in regards of Solar energy at http://www.arosaenergy.com/faq.html that might help you with your lecture.

Answer by Jerry Lee
You might connect a solar cell or two to a little motor (motion attracts attention)
ideally, the motor might power a fan, which could power a small wind generator, which might power a light (LED)

Question by Lonely Foxx:
How can I make a Wind-Turbine powered light bulb?
I’m trying to make some energy efficient outdoor lighting for our poorly lit 5 acre yard. My idea was to have a wind-turbine hooked up to some sort of rechargeable battery that would power a light bulb during times with no wind. My only problem is how to go about making this turbine. Can anyone help me and point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

——————————————

Answer by itsbob1
Hear is a smal idea. Use a bicycle tire/wheel and the small generator from the bike as the power source and mount fins to catch the wind. Most of these were 6 volt but newer ones were 12 volt. I have built a couple of these but a small solar panel would be superior in the long run. No moving parts!

Answer by James L
Wind power solutions at home

With the world’s ever-increasing demand of power being more than its supply, it is about time that we take concrete steps to save power. Apart from being conscious about the usage of power and water at home, one can employ pollution-free and cost-effective power solutions at our homes. Solar power solutions and wind power solutions are the two of the most efficient solutions that can replace the conventional power solutions employed at our homes.

These solutions can help you combat power outages, reduce your electricity bills, and also help the environment.

This article will explore the cost-effective wind power solution that you can employ at home.

Wind power solutions work ideal when the following conditions are met:
• You have a home or farmhouse spread over a huge area. Typically, wind power solutions are employed in areas that spread over an acre.
• The average wind speed in your area is around 11 miles per hour. If you stay in a place that has tiny wind flow, your system will not work. Consult an expert before installing the wind power solution at home.
• You need to draw water from external sources. You can install a wind power system even when you do not need to draw water from outside. However, if you need to draw water from outside on a regular basis, a wind power system offers the ideal solution.
• Your home needs a lot of uninterrupted power supply. Combating those power outages is simple with the pollution-free wind power systems. You need no longer worry about a break in your work because of a power uncertainty.

A typical wind power system comprises of a tower and five blades to churn out wind energy. The length of the wind tower varies depending on the location of your house. You might need a longer tower if you are in low-wind zone; you can work with a shorter tower if you live by the beach. Using a wind generator, this wind energy can be converted into useful electrical energy to be employed at home for running various electrical appliances. You can even store the power generated for later use, making wind generators more efficient than convention power systems.

If you are confused with the wind power jargon, here’s a piece of information for you. The terms, wind mills, wind turbines, and wind generators are used to refer to the same machine.

I know this is a bit lenghthy, but it should help u comprehend wind power a bit better! Check out the link below for more info about solar/wind power for your home!

Answer by Jim
Check out http://www.Renewable-Power-Resource.info they have videos and manuals to get you going.

Thats what the wife and I used when we built our last home.

That should get you going in the right direction
