Question by ankita.iitm:
how to generate electricity by wind up action(just like in toys)?
THE DEVICE SHOULD STOP THE ELECTRICITY GENERATION WHENEVER WE LIKE AND WE WOULD BE ABLE TO USE THE REMAINING UNWINDING TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY SOME OTHER TIME
not wind turbine but wind up action like in toys where u wind up and due to the unwinding of spring toy performs an action (here by unwinding action we have to rotate a shaft)

——————————————

Answer by akhi@India
Well
Anything which can produce a force enough to rotate the shaft of dynamo or generator, can produce electricity.

Using wind up action:-
search for the spiral spring which should high torsion. Or torsional constant.

Unfortunately there are no such springs in spiral which can sustain the rotation of shaft for a quite significant time.
Because
1 they are too spacy.
2 no such material which should have very high torsional constant.
3. Complicated rotatory motion.
Initially very fast then slow and slower.
And do not let to provide uniformity in production.

For your model.
Search any huge toy and remove the appraus (coil + its base support+ key shaft + action shaft.)

and buy the dynamo which is equal to the motor used in tape recorders to draw casette reel.

Connect the action shaft of the apparatus to the shaft of dynamo. Also check for the rotation both should have motion in same direction whether clockwise or anticlockwise.

Make a hole in apparatus. From which you can control the rotation of inner wheel inside the apparatus.
This will ensure you when to use and when to put off.

I hope you will undertand.
If not then kindly write me mail i’ll send you some picture which will enable you comprehend very easily.
i am at akp.grmc@yahoo.co.in

Question by WindowsY2K:
Can I save Electricity / money w by converting “true sine wave” to Square Sine Wave like RV DC to AC Converter
I admit, I know next to nothing about electricity, thats why im asking this question.

I want to know what is required to “stretch” my AC electricity in my house. I want to take my “true sine wave” coming into my house, and convert it into a “square sine wave” that will give me capability to power more things for less money. I dont know if this will save money, but it should at least in theory work to power things. I got this idea from looking into a RV and their electrical systems, and learned that they have DC to AC converters to power AC appliances. (although most things run off DC, like a laptop, and in your home you use a AC to DC adapter to power your laptop, cell phone etc.) so you can eliminate the AC to DC adapter for many things in a RV. But the (cheaper) DC – AC adapters also have some one-of-a-kind properties, like giving a “square” sine wave, which messes up digital clocks, breadmakers. – Can I save electricity /money by converting from true to square sine waves in my house?
anyone can state yes or no. it does not answer the question, or prove you know anything (although i see you have answered a lot of questions). could you give some supporting details. I know there will be some “loss” in conversion, probably via heat, which is helpful in winter. but i want a scientific explanation why a true sine wave is more efficient or a square sine wave is more efficient to power appliances, laptop, tv, electric heater, etc. does it depend on specific appliance? or does this apply for everything electrical. It seems obvious to me, that square sine waves are easier and cheaper to produce than true sine waves, example, cheaper dc to ac adapters produce square ones.
Another sub question, would be, what is cost or energy savings of producing square sine waves instead of true sine waves (for electric companies), maybe they can produce square ones for 20% less energy than trues sine waves?

another sub q: who decided and why, true sine waves should be in each home?

——————————————

Answer by pahump1@verizon.net
more devices comsuming and losing power; the answer is ; not feasible or efficient

Answer by LeAnne
You have 120 V 60 Hz in your home because it is the easiest and least costly to produce.

A 60 Hz, true sine wave is the natural output from a generator rotating at 3600 RPMs without the addition of any further electrical or electronic circuitry.
You get a square wave from affordable converters because it is most economical way to convert DC to a square wave AC than to utilize extra circuitry to mimic a sine wave.

The RMS measurement is the true measure of an AC power source – rather than peak-peak or peak power, it is the measure of power that indicates the power which would be available if it were DC. i.e. a 120 V RMS AC supply will perform the same work as a 120 V DC supply.
If the RMS voltage is the same, it’s really academic what shape the wave form is when the amount of actual, available power is considered.
If the peak voltage was the same, a square wave would have a higher RMS value – but it would also necessarily mean you would need to input more energy to get it – and that is not an efficient trade off .

——————————————

Question by Young Men With Problems:
Solar Energy.. I am interested in a career in the solar industry and would like information. ?
I live in the bay area part of California currently and am looking for information for a career in solar energy. What major would it be under? Would it be superior to go through a trade?

——————————————

Answer by GABY
The range of jobs is long. It could be as easy as sales and installation you could begin in at any time, up to Physics and Chemistry involved in design and manufacturing. You must first decide which area you are interested in.

Answer by J.
It all depends on what you want to do and where you want to be 5, 10, 20 and 30 years from now.

If you want to be doing installs, or doing big massive installations and distribution- go to the building trades and go from there with a focus to the substitute energy systems and substitute construction methods.

If you anticipate to end up trying to research the slicing edge of technologies- be ready to make your own company and plan your college path based on that, and study Mandarin. Chances are high that what field you aimed it going into college might not be around, or the industry might no longer be in the US as it moved to China. The only thing you will be guaranteed if you go to college- big debt when you graduate.

Answer by rod
Greenerdawn.com believe they are bases in san fran. If they do not have the info they can find it. Good luck

Question by dt:
Will solar energy for house’s be effective in a place like Kansas City?
I mean how much sun do you need? And, does it work on overcast day’s? And, I figure you probably would not have any energy during the snowy season. Also, do most people that use solar for their house’s only energize certain lower demanding things?

——————————————

Answer by Rebtl
If you are getting direct sunlight, it shouldn’t matter if it is the snowy season or not.

There are ways to build solar panels that only power a couple of things, or other systems that can power your whole house.

I built one panel of my own just to see how well it would work and I am powering a couple of lamps and a Television from it.

Check out the plans I used here

Answer by Kim-chi
Heat does not affect how much a solar panel absorbs. It matters on how much sunlight there are during the day. Also, the amount of cloudy days is also a factor. Your home also must be faced towards the south to maximize the about of sunlight you get during the day.
Other ways to be eco-friendly is to install a wind turbine for wind energy. A windy location would be preferred for this. There are many other smaller ways to be eco-friendly like buying a treadmill/bike that runs on the power you generate.

Answer by Danimal
2 more years….. photovoltaic panels will be history like cassette tapes

Answer by Bedouin
I’m not sure a country like Pakistan would have the components to make your own solar panels; you might have to look on the net for it with a local search. Otherwise you might be superior off to look at a finished panel which will save you money in the long term. Do not forget you will need a voltage controller so you do not overload the battery.

Answer by indian
you do google search and contact the companies which manufactures solar panel..or contact an expert in this field..

Answer by Farid M
first you have to sibmit a request form to the nearest taliban office: if they approve it they will come along with their AK47s and bazookas and make a panel of your house;)

Kinda like how solar panels harvest energy and use it when there is no sunlight.

——————————————

Answer by Eric
It’s simple, you can’t. That is why certain areas of the world would not be able to make use of this technology.

Answer by Vince
You can blow on the windmill to see if that would help.

Answer by azree
well they are all moron,

actually there a way e can make it spin. Integrate the system or infinite magnet spin and water flows with it. Yet, the methane gas system which burns might give the flow by pointing their exhaust to the windmills.

yes, integrate all these, and we might find the world 1st reusable and immortal energy

——————————————

Answer by kvuo
yes, and they already do..

it’s not practical for widespread use.

Answer by failurbydsign427
wow good ideas. it would probably be just as effective or more even but also really costly.

Answer by a kinder, gentler me
In Japan, they do use the oceans energy to generate electricity…the other stuff – I do not know…
