Very little. What this does is to reduce the fan speed, and with the motor turning more slowly, it will draw less power. But the huge power hog is the compressor motor, which will be running any time that the thermostat is asking for more cooling. Which means that the warmer you can stand, the less power it will draw.

It’s a nice bright light but it fails to show the benefits of LED’s in a few respects. The color temp is pretty cool so it casts a bluish light. But that did not really bother me much. What bothered me most about this was that when you turn it on, there is a few second delay before this light illuminates. Not what I’d anticipate from a LED light. Also combining that oddity with the fact that you cannot put this bulb on a dimmer there is not much benefit to this bulb over a CFL.

At this point in time (2010), LED light bulbs are getting brighter and can be used as a low energy light source instead of CFLs in many situations; but they are not cost effective. The 15 watt BR40 was my first 100w equivalent LED bulb. I have several 5-7 watt LED light bulbs and the new Evolux 13 watt (100 watt equivalent) light bulb.

The BR40 has a rather massive diameter, so installing it into a floor lamp involved reshaping the lamp shade harp. I am very satisfied with the brightness of the BR40 bulb; but unlike the other LED bulbs I have purchased, the BR40 has a lag between turning it on and seeing it light up. It’s as though it is charging up a ballast, then sending power to the LEDs.

The BR40 seems to be a great low energy replacement 23 watt CFL that I formerly had in the floor lamp. The energy savings is not cost effective (10 watts per hour), but LEDs do not have any mercury in them and they presumably last for 50 years of normal use. The other advantage over CFLs is their low heat generation.

Basically, there is no cost advantage to using 120 volt LED light bulbs. It’s just green. However, I do have an LED desk lamp that is powered by an 9 volt adapter; during a power outage, this lamp has provided light for 8 hours using a (3) 9 volt battery harness I made.

I think future homes will have additional 9 to 12 volt circuits for LED lighting. Currently, the bulbs must use 120 volts and converted it to low voltage DC.
