Question by Bielzabob:
With all these energy saving bulbs and added increases to save the environment…?
why are the prices for utilities going up and up?
it doesnt make any sense at all, in the last few years, we have started using more and more energy saving bulbs that use 7watts instead of 60 etc and the washing machines use less water… all that stuff.
surely it would add up to cheaper bills than we had 10 years ago, instead we are paying more than we ever have and apparently use half the resources.

yes this is kind of a rant but also a valid question i think?

——————————————

Answer by lg
cause the objective is not to save you money, it’s to make more of it with you and have some more to sell to other.

ultimately you will pay more and use less, even though they told us we would save in the long run. that was at current rate not including inflation on energy witch they knew they would raise. you made the move to save some money and they just took it away.

Answer by MTRstudent
Using less energy will reduce energy costs if the savings are significant, because power companies will turn off their most costly generating capacity first.

The EIA seems to think most of it is fuel costs:

http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epa/epa_sum.html

To 2007, fossil fuel prices increased 30.2% in 4yrs or so whilst electricity prices went up by 17% in the US. Also, electricity production has increased, despite energy saving bulbs etc (they cut lighting energy demand, but that doesn’t mean much if people begin using more powerful TVs, larger fridges etc).

10 years ago, oil prices were around $ 20-30, last week they hit $ 80 and back in 2007 before the recession they hit $ 147. Increased demand (think China?) and lack of big, cheap discoveries probably made a difference. Other energy prices, particularly gas, tend to follow the same trends as oil.

Without energy saving measures, energy prices would most likely have gone up even more swiftly – we saw back in 2007 how small demand-supply mis-matches could cause HUGE energy prices!

Finally, some countries (like the UK) are now investing a lot of money in grid upgrades and new power capacity and with current credit problems I envision some power companies might want to cover part of the cost with increased revenue. This is entirely conjecture though!

Answer by Bulldog6
You are right that we are using more conservative tools to save energy, but the common denominator in creating, managing, and maintaining the power source is the human factor and technological development. No matter if we use gas, oil, solar, hydro, nuclear power, everyone one of those sources is maintained by people. Many of these employees are union workers which contributes significantly to the cost of labor. Development is continually underway to find new or superior ways to produce energy. Research is costly and has to be funded from somewhere, much of it from utility sales. New technology being introduced into the manufacturing processes are expensive. The infrastructure of the utilities across the country are old. Many generating plants were built in the 40s and 50s. They are falling apart and new construction is needed. Even the simplest solar generating plant that services no more than 3 or 4 homes costs 10s of thousands of dollars. There are forces that fight the construction of the most stable, safest, and durable source of electricity we know, and that is the anti-nuclear groups. The last nuclear power plant built in America was in the early 70s while countries around the world have built hundreds of them, thus our heavy reliance on oil. Even oil is available in abundance in the US but environmental groups, right or wrong, block its extraction. Thus the need to spend billions on foreign when we could develop our own oil sources for pennies in the US. All of this is the evidence that needs to be considered when one hears the myth that conservation is the solution to energy costs. While we need to conserve, we must also act responsibly and manage the other resources we have to keep costs reasonable for the consumer.

——————————————

Question by Mr Average Joe:
Can I make money by collecting mercury out of energy saving light bulbs?
I was wondering if I bust open one of those compact fluorescent light bulb that has burned out and save the mercury, I could make some money off the mercury?

How much is mercury an ounce?

——————————————

Answer by SkyDancer American Made
I think that is a stupid idea unless you want to try and sell it back to China. If you check those “American energy efficient light bulbs, they were all made in China. That is just another way for them to get rid of their toxic waste.

Answer by panurge2
The amount of mercury in a fluorescent bulb is so small, that you would have to pay just to get rid of the pile of broken glass. The stuff is poison, not just for the environment, but will kill you as well.
btw All types of fluorescent bulbs have a TINY drop of mercury in them.

Answer by kcguy6935
I truly hope you are joking, this would not be a good thing to do for at least two reasons. One:heavy metal poisoning is not enjoyable and two the mercury would be very difficult to get as each bulb is mandated to have under 4mg. If you must collect it get it from old thermostats they have over 100 times more mercury in them and it is in liquid form called a mercury switch. (Again if you aren’t properly trained with the right equipment this would also be idiotic)

——————————————

Answer by Fatefinger
No. Those are actually outdoor lights that have a yellow tint. Supposedly they are yellow as bugs are not attracted to them. They are wrong.

Question by RosieRoadkill:
What do people think of the new energy saving light bulbs?
Do they give off as much light as the old ones?

——————————————

Answer by Will F
There fine.

Make sure you dispose of them properly though as each light bulb contains a good bit of mercury.

In other words, these are worse for the environment than a regular light bulb if you just throw it away.

Answer by sursumcorda
I like the idea, but not the actual use. It takes longer for them to get up to speed and give off the amount of light I need to see by. Also, I am not seeing the long lasting use the packaging promises–they burn out quicker than advertised and I have to do the perilous waste disposal, rather than toss in the trash. So overall, not too happy, but I am using them.

Answer by Timothy L
Bought my first one in 1981. They are great. They do not usually put out quite the same amount of light as claimed on box ie 11watt equals 60 watt old style so you need to up the wattage a tiny and remember that some do take half a minute to warm up- but they still save a lot of power and do last for a long time. (the first one I purchased lasted 7 years and got a lot of use).

——————————————
I have ONLY fluorescents in my home. An added benefit for me, being only five feet tall, is that they practically NEVER burn out, so I do not have to drag out a chair/ladder/tall friend to change them!!

Answer by Taz
I have them in each socket. Inside and outside.
I save at least 10% a month, sometimes more…

If you search around you can find some in multipacks that are cheaper then just a single one….

It is worth the money to use them…

Answer by saturn622
Yep, we love them around here. Their farily cheap comparing how long they last.

Question by pamdazzle:
How much mercury is in the new energy-saving light bulbs, is it bad for our environment to be in our landfills

I saw a special on tv that it is a hazard if you to break one.
I am speaking about the small spiral flourescent lightbulbs they will eventually burn out and im wonderinng burnt out or not if it is broken either at home or in a landfill is it a hazard. And if so why do not they mark it on the package or tell people about it?

——————————————

Answer by mtn paul
wow actually learned some thing new mercury in light bulbs and land fills that is scary worth looking into those heavy metals are forever get on it children just state no to stupidity

Answer by vladoviking
Last I checked they stated you should only be concerned if you are throwing away lights in bulk mostly speaking about the more massive flourescents like possibly the 4 foot ones you have in your kitchen.
But mercury is mercury isnt it.

Answer by Nickel Johann
NO

They reduce the electricity consumption. Electricity generation relies heavily on coal. So if you have to produce less electricity, you burn less coal.
So what´s the relation with Mercury?
Mercury is emitted in massive quantities as a result of coal being burned in coal power plants. Using less energy reduces Mercury emissions on a plant basis. This reduction is higher than the increased mercury due to the light bulbs.

And if most people give their used bulbs for recycling, most Mercury will not be released and the effect will even be better
