Question by Joe P:
Where is the ideal place to purchase solar panel supplies?
I’m looking to build a small home solar charging system, and I’d like to go to a store so that I can get advice on how to build it and what I can anticipate from the size of panel I create. Are there any good stores in the Portland Oregon area? Or a website that is very detailed? I have no prior knowledge about solar charging kits. And what I have found on google assumes you know what you are doing…

Answer by Difdi
I did a swift google search for the words Portland, Oregon and the phrase “solar panel”, and this came up in the first ten links.

Answer by Harry
You might want to check the following offers (direct link to product page):

Answer by Bob Westwood
You can build your own! I used this guide and it worked great, actually a fun tiny project!

how many blades does a wind turbine need? some have three others have four. What is best? Mine has four and is 3ft and homemade it runs from a permanent magnet dc motor is it ideal to have three blades or four for ideal output?

Answer by Nata T
doen’t matter how many blades, just so long as they are matched to the generator and are balanced.

Answer by johncundiff38
For balancing issues- I believe three to be the ideal because there are no right angle forces.

Answer by N
There is no single answer.

This will largely depend on the speed at which the trubine is going to operate. The different designs lead to different “coefficient of performance” according to the speed. Here are some links to explain the basic science.

Answer by Ronnie S
the spiraly energy saving ones

Answer by kenny J
Go with the new bulbs. The CFL bulbs.

Answer by vladoviking
All flourescent lights have some quantity of mercury in them it is neccesary for them to function. None of them “produce” mercury. The CFLs(flourescent) usually gives you equal the light of an incandesent (old style) for about a third of the wattage.

Question by :
Are the streetlights in Australia uniformly the most efficient, energy saving, ideal lightglobes available?
The same with public buildings is a sidenote.

I have a feeling that the streetlamps are old, inefficient ones because of the color but I am not certain.

——————————————

Answer by Sheldon Cooper
Current street lights in Australia are not the most efficient. Plans are enveloping to incorporate newer technologies in street lighting in Australia. Solar Streetscapes seem to have the latest technology (and most energy efficient) street lighting products., but have not incorporated it yet throughout Australia.

Definitely superior than mainstream lighting (start up costs are more costly though).

Check this website out! http://www.ecocentricenergy.com.au/products/solar-street-lights-australia/

Answer by Prodi Gium
I have totally no bloody idea.

It would be good if they had individual solar powered lights though.
I do wonder how much energy they waste with street lights that accidentally stay on during the day. Really ticks me off.

Question by chris m:
Hi confused here, when is the ideal time to use washing machine in order to save electricity?

——————————————

Answer by Mrs. Mingus
Off-peak hours are usually M-F 7pm to 7am and all day on weekends, but you need to check the website of your electric company, because the hours are different for each company.

Answer by alidou
Dryer uses a lot more electricity than washing machine, but Someone once advice me to do it at night, and if it was a few loads, when putting clothes in dryer to do it right after the other while it was hot, so it doesn’t work as hard when heating and drying.

Answer by madbaggage
It uses just as much electricity to do a full wash, no matter when you use it.

If you want to save money (not electricity) then see if you are on a split tarriff, where the electricity used at night is cheaper. If you are, then you can do a wash a tiny cheaper by running it at night.

If you really want to save electricity then get a new washing machine because more modern ones are all built with energy efficiency in mind, or if thats going too far, use a lower temperature and the shortest wash that works.

——————————————
I purchased the Scrubbing Bubbles automatic shower cleaner thinking it could not work as well as it says. To my surprise it is a great product that lives up to the claims. I’d love to hear about your cannot live without it products and the ones you would state save your money.

——————————————

Answer by stevetower
Never brush paint on when you can roll, never roll when you can spray with an airless sprayer. Always use a high quality tool, state DeWalt, Porter-Cable, Makita, instead of a weekend workman tool such as Craftsman power tools.

Answer by south_la_gurl
The ideal one we have in the Timer on the hot water heater for the bathrooms. . . my other favorite is the Swiffer vacuum sweeper/mop. . . its a great time saver

Answer by Jeannie D
I love Magic Eraser for stains, Resolve for carpet stains, Zep grout cleaner for tile grout, Clorox for mostly anything, Murphey’s Oil soap for scrubbing wood and cleaning my car’s interior. You cannot beat Windex on the windows and yes it does help with bug-bites, I do not know why. I did purchase some Stain Stomper but we will just see about that one….

Answer by RAWR
Use real dishes instead of plastic/paper ones.

Answer by Michelley
well i guess there are lots of tiny things… changing your lightbulbs to fluorescent, making sure your tires are always pumped up so you dont burn as much fuel, using as tiny light as possible, taking shorter showers and not using the water full blast, walking to the library or to get a smoothie or wherever instead of driving (plus, you can save money on gym membership!) and lastly, lots of people purchase eco friendly clothes and products and I HAVE AN IDEA! just dont purchase them at all unless you really need them. also, compost bins are awesome and amazing

Answer by Tomiko C
Thats good for you to like it. Well there are lots of methods… umm I’d rather not list them but heres a good site to find tips on saving money and going green.

Question by Last_exit_before_toll:
I live in the NE. What is the ideal energy saving temperature to set on the thermostat when no one home in a mo?
I’ve been asked to home sit for about 6 months. This would mean leaving my mobile home unoccupied. What temp should I leave the thermostat on to keep pipes from freezing?

——————————————

Answer by sensible_man
Assuming you have good insulation and skirting, I would recommend 60 degrees. If you are not going to be there for 6 months, I would drain the water system, use anti-freeze in the fixture traps and close it up for the time. This is especially true if the home sitting does not grant you to make trips to your own home for long periods.

Answer by Hydroace
To expand on what sensible_man wrote, when you drain the water system, make sure you get it all. If you are on city water, turn off the water at the service entrance (your water department might help with this), if you are on a well turn off power to the pump and drain the pressure tank. Turn off your hot water tank so it remains cold, then drain the water from it.Open the hot and cold faucets in the home and let them drain back through the hot water tank (you left the drain open, right?); open the lowest spigot in the to grant water to drain out of the cold water supply lines.
If you have a water softener, the huge tank with salt in it should be OK, but you might want to disconnect the resin tank (the tall, skinny tank) and drain it. Remove any cartridge filter in the supply line and drain it before reassembling it. Try to make sure you get the water drained out of all the plumbing systems – even the any dehumidifier reservoirs or humidifiers, decorative fountains, etc. Flush the toilets and make sure the holding tanks are empty. Go to an RV supply home (= Recreational Vehicle) and get some anti-freeze to put in the plumbing traps – your toilet(s), kitchen sink, lavatory sink(s), and laundry room sink all have traps in them.
Now close the drain to the hot water tank, and turn the thermostat off. If you are gone from the home for 6 months, something as easy as a power outage might knock your furnace out, and it might not restart even when the power comes back on. You will save a bit more money without heat, and your trailer will be truly winterized. Good luck with it.
