Question by Last_exit_before_toll:
I live in the NE. What is the ideal energy saving temperature to set on the thermostat when no one home in a mo?
I’ve been asked to home sit for about 6 months. This would mean leaving my mobile home unoccupied. What temp should I leave the thermostat on to keep pipes from freezing?

——————————————

Answer by sensible_man
Assuming you have good insulation and skirting, I would recommend 60 degrees. If you are not going to be there for 6 months, I would drain the water system, use anti-freeze in the fixture traps and close it up for the time. This is especially true if the home sitting does not grant you to make trips to your own home for long periods.

Answer by Hydroace
To expand on what sensible_man wrote, when you drain the water system, make sure you get it all. If you are on city water, turn off the water at the service entrance (your water department might help with this), if you are on a well turn off power to the pump and drain the pressure tank. Turn off your hot water tank so it remains cold, then drain the water from it.Open the hot and cold faucets in the home and let them drain back through the hot water tank (you left the drain open, right?); open the lowest spigot in the to grant water to drain out of the cold water supply lines.
If you have a water softener, the huge tank with salt in it should be OK, but you might want to disconnect the resin tank (the tall, skinny tank) and drain it. Remove any cartridge filter in the supply line and drain it before reassembling it. Try to make sure you get the water drained out of all the plumbing systems – even the any dehumidifier reservoirs or humidifiers, decorative fountains, etc. Flush the toilets and make sure the holding tanks are empty. Go to an RV supply home (= Recreational Vehicle) and get some anti-freeze to put in the plumbing traps – your toilet(s), kitchen sink, lavatory sink(s), and laundry room sink all have traps in them.
Now close the drain to the hot water tank, and turn the thermostat off. If you are gone from the home for 6 months, something as easy as a power outage might knock your furnace out, and it might not restart even when the power comes back on. You will save a bit more money without heat, and your trailer will be truly winterized. Good luck with it.

——————————————
This will be my second winter in this house. I need help I know a lot of people will state keep the temperature at 60 but my home is very old and the pipes run in the walls so I need to keep my temperature at 70 down stairs otherwise I will have a lot of problems. My next problem is my bed room gets so cold. We can turn the thurmostat up to 80 in the bed room that controlls the upstairs heat and my bed room will still be freezing. I had a space heater last year but that did not help much. I have checked everything its all insulated and I covered up all the windows so no air could get through. I do not want to do this winter to be the same as last year. Any recommendations would be great.

Question by el gato sin dientes:
What are the ideal way to save energy on my apartment?
I would like to know to reduced my emissions of CO2 by changing tiny by tiny my apartment. I have already changed all my light bulbs to CFLS. I got 4 free CFL’S from my utility company, and I purchased 4 more for $ 10.00.
Does anyone has a list showing how much it would cost to change lights bulbs, insulation, windows, appliances, solar water heater, solan panels? How will each saved me on electricity?
I would like to begin upgrading my apartment for the least costly changes to the most.
Is there anything else i should change too?

——————————————

Answer by bobbydig21
Solar panels as of this day are not cost effective. Just make sure all of your electronics/appliances are energy star efficient. To help on your energy usage turn your AC down in the summer, and do not use your heat unless you have to. Ask you landlord what changes you are granted to do because you might get in trouble if you remove something. You might be able to move to another apartment that is more energy efficient then yours, and it would save you a bundle of money.
Hope this helps.

Answer by TK-421
Of all the activities and related events that make up an average person’s life, heating, cooling, and transportation are the ones responsible for the greatest amounts of energy used and CO2 released. Unfortunately these are probably the ones hardest to change too. At the same time, there are tiny things you can do to help.

Heating: if you need to heat your home/apartment during the winter, turn down the heat a couple of degrees. Some go as far as saying that a home in winter should be heated to only 68-70 degrees F (20-21 deg C).

Cooling: make sure your AC unit is not in direct sunlight, so that it does not have to work off the sun’s heat along with you apartment’s.

Cooling and heating alike: make sure your windows and outside doors close properly and there are no gaps. Just make sure that it’s not all absolutely airtight and hermetically sealed, because then you can have problems with carbon monoxide and CO2 buildup in the house.

Transportation: most people own and drive cars, so.. if you are going to purchase a different one in the future, purchase one with a smaller engine. If you cannot do that, change your driving style a little, which can make a large difference. #1 accelerate more slowly, #2 try not to go faster than 55-60 mph on the expressways (above 60, fuel consumption increases faster than your speed). With these 2 techniques, I get about 30% superior fuel economy than my father with the same exact automobile in the same traffic (36 vs 27 mpg).

Answer by LizzaPiza
Reset your hot water heaters thermastat at a lower temperature

Eat by candlelight

Shower for 5 minutes

Use ceiling fans

Know what you want before you open the fridge – do not hold the door open and stare like I do

——————————————

Answer by Jake Birdem
Of course you want to find people who are both homeowners and ecology mindful.

Save the planet rallies are likely to be winners.

Some recruit college students to pass out flyers and put up BB board announcements, you can cover multiple campuses by using Fiverr.

You can host a local meetup group and give presentations on the subject, though the going price is around $ 15/mo.

Question by hellhound120:
Whats the ideal way to save money on electricity?
I have electric heat in the underground level of my apartment, my bills have been killing me since having to downgrade to a lower paying job This winter has been really bad on my electricity and I am trying to find a way to make it so my bill wont be so damn much. I have been only having my heater on when I am awake or when its real cold but then shut it off when its warm enough, or when Im going to bed, or when I leave

——————————————

Answer by BarbieGirl8
Get a space heater/heaters and turn the main heat off. Make sure you turn lights off in rooms that you aren’t in, unplug anything that uses electricity with a motor even when they aren’t in use and off the motor will pull electricity, make sure all your doors and windows are secure/get something to cover the cracks under your doors, wear more clothes/extra layer inside.

Answer by PETE HAS CHEESY FEET
turn all lights off when not using them storage heaters Only come on at night , dont put tv on standby and i find key meters the cheapest despite what i have heard

Answer by lovejesus
The ways you say are normal and good ways a lot of people use to conserve energy. Also, you could get yourself a nice warm blanket to cover yourself as you sit around at night. My electric company has a plan where you can average the payments out over the year so the winter costs aren’t all hit in the winter but easier then and pay the rest over the year. You could get some solid pink insulation at a hardware store, that is like styrofoam (not the yellow kind) and cover some of the larger windows with that, if the styrofoam product you use is ok for indoor use like this — not an airborne hazard. Also, and most importantly, it sounds like you need to pray about your life. When you know God, your spiritual Father, then pray about your life, then He can help you live a superior life. As God is love, life is primarily about love and relationships in order to have a rich and full life. Also, you need to know God’s Son, Jesus Christ, in your life as your Lord and Savior as Jesus died on the cross as payment for our sins. Having Him with you will give you God’s blessing and forgiveness, as you live God’s way. We need to know and follow God in this life so we can go to heaven after we die, and so we can get God’s help now. Not following God leads to hell, eternal suffering. Instead, there is an important prayer to pray to become a born again Christian. This prayer should be stated with faith in God and a sincere heart:
“Dear God, I know that I am a sinful person and I do not want to be like this anymore. I know that Jesus Christ died on the cross as payment for our sins, and I want to accept Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior forever so I can receive God’s forgiveness, guidance, and go to heaven after I die. Thank you, dear God, for your mercy and guidance; in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
After saying this prayer, you should check out a Christian church like Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran.
Also, get into their Bible study group so you can learn more about God, Jesus, and God’s will for your life. The Bible is God’s instruction book about how to live a God-honoring life so you can go to heaven after you die. The church can also get you baptized and prayed for. You can pray for yourself daily too. God guide your life.

I want to install some solar panels on my house. I have heard about a few companies where I can pay my current rate for electricity and they will install and maintain solar panels on my house. Then again, I could also purchase my own system. What is the ideal deal here?

——————————————

Answer by beastly rose
well they both have there advantages.
is the maintenance free,
and my cousin purchased his own and he gets money from the electric company

Answer by Hannah’s Grandpa
Whether yo purchase or lease, if you install a massive enough system, you could still a check from your utility company for what you put into the grid above what you use.
The problem with leasing that I see is.
1. do you still get rebates from the different agencies.
2. The system does not go with the home if you decide to sell. and having a solar system is a great selling point with lower utility bills.
3. the system never get paid off, where with a purchased system in normally paid off in 7 years.

Answer by alex378
Best system is to build your own,you can build one under $ 200 for a solar panel.

——————————————

Answer by Austin
I’d advocate electrical engineering.

Answer by Tron Paul
environmental or electrical engineering

Answer by FredA
Most of the solar energy companies I found looking to hire engineers require many years of experience (3+). It really depends, though. It might just be like this now, because the economy is so bad. Participate in a research group during your school year to earn some of that experience.

As for your major, try chemical engineering or electrical engineering.

Do you save more having you air con. on all the time at just one setting or turning it off when your not home and turning it on when you get home everyday?

——————————————

Answer by Snowflake
Having the air cond. on only when you are at home…& on Auto…

Answer by David T
The easiest way to save energy is by not using it.

It sounds daft but if you do not turn something on then you are not wasting any at all.

Do this by Getting up early in summer using the most of the cooler daylight hours.
Insulate ready for winter.

Answer by jimbob92065
turn it off and leave it off. Thats what I do, and it’s plenty hot here. Of course I can jump in the pool if it gets too hot….

——————————————
