Question by tim is cool:
how to turn a fan into a wind turbine?
like those wind turbines that make energy. because it is basically the opposite. it takes energy and turns it into wind. a turbine takes wind and turns it into energy. how can i do this?

——————————————

Answer by billrussell42
Depends on the type of motor the fan has. Only DC PM (Permanent Magnet) motors will also work as a generator.

.

Answer by sweeti_butt
It depend on the size of the motor that is connected on the other end of the turbine. If you have small fan then you use small motor and get small power! But I do not think it will be an economical to produce electricity with fan, the reason is that you are using fan which is running with electricity, so first brief your question then I will clear you.

Answer by gintable
Wind turbine blades are specifically designed differently than fan blades, because it is more optimal to taylor the design to the application, even though in theory they have opposite energy conversions and could be geometrically identical.

The same is true with the motor and generator. Motors and generators both work in either direction, but they work superior when operated in the direction for which they were specifically designed.

How do I do this? DON’T!

Get a wind turbine and get an electric generator, both specifically designed for the application intended.

——————————————

Question by :
How do I make my own solar panel?
How do I make my own solar panels and generate my own power cheaply. The commercial one’s are just too expensive.

——————————————

Answer by mugikuyu
Its very simple but the entire process is quite lengthy. You will need to buy some materials and then assemble everything according to the instructions in this ebook http://bit.ly/hlMb5u. There are also instructions for wind power as well. I found it very useful.

Answer by roderick_young
For solar electric panels, there is generally no money to be saved by making your own. A homemade panel can’t legally be connected to the grid in the US, and you would end up using batteries instead, nullifying any cost advantage.

If you want to do it just for fun, think about buying solar laminate like this http://sunelec.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=47 rather than soldering together your own cells. If you watch for sales, it sometimes gets down to $ 1/watt.

Also, there is no need to pay anyone for an e-book on how to make panels. places like this http://www.mdpub.com/SolarPanel/ give you all the information free.

Answer by Rami C
Now it’s easier than ever to build your own solar panel and wind turbine with materials you can find at any hardware store. No special tools or expertise needed, anyone can do this. Just click the source below if you’d like to know how to do it!

——————————————

Answer by Brian S
You’ll want to turn it off before you unplug it, but no… there is no danger of losing what is stored in that case.

Answer by John R
It’s safe but unneeded.
Just shut it down and power on each time you use it.

You will not lose any of your info on your hard drive.
If you have a window open and do this it will not be saved, but you might be prompted to save your data.

Answer by Kent P
I was thinking the same thing! Before i asked i decided to check to see if anyone else had the same concern, my personal is hooked to a light switch outlet so with the flip of the light switch the power can be turned off to that outlet. I have everything connected to that outlet from my world wide web modem, computer, cpu, a lamp, printer, things like that and everynight i turn it off which is the equivialent to unplugging it.

Question by elrodvoss:
What Solar Panel Efficiency would replace Coal?
A friend sent me an article that a company called Fraunhofer has produced solar panels that can achieve 41.1% efficiency.

Now taking into account the fact that solar do sent work during storms or night and greatly reduced during winters, what % do you think would be needed to supply a “majority” of our power needs as a nation?
*Mispelling*
Now taking into account the fact that solar “does not” work during storms or night and greatly reduced during winters, what % do you think would be needed to supply a “majority” of our power needs as a nation?

——————————————

Answer by hipp5
While I think efficiency is one aspect of the equation I think cost and finding a decent storage medium will be much more important. No matter how efficient solar panels are, they simply cost too much right now. Add to that the need for reliable power at all times of the day and you have got some hurdles to overcome. I think as hydrogen energy matures it’ll become a great storage medium for solar energy and we will see a lot more wide-scale solar.

Answer by Starbuck
Supplying the entire nations power grid by solar could not be accomplished with this centuries technology. Solar power will be a minor energy producer for decades to come and comes with much drawbacks on environmental costs of production, battery systems and many other issues not resolved.

Answer by g.aidonopoulos
I believe the question should be put as: What should be the price of solar panels in order to replace coal.

If the price go down enough then there will be no problem with the commercial efficiencies already achieved.

The huge challenge for the solar industry is to achieve the famous grid – parity. We should notice however that the grid parity will not come at the same time to all countries in the world since there are several irradiation levels and electricity prices as well.

As so the answer to the altered question is that very soon (2-3 years) if the solar industry continue to expand at this day rates we will achieve the grid – parity at many places in the world

——————————————

Answer by Dr. Clandestine:)
Many dude, they have a nice supply of programs with many projects and theory’s involved.
Try the search engine for colleges that are the ideal with this Program,
Critics will rate it, students, teachers, parents, and faculty.

Question by Jordan L:
Why cannot energy saving light bulbs dim, when used on a dimmer switch?
We have recently installed some new light fixtures and did not realize that energy saving light bulbs will not dim, they will only work on maximum power, when the dimmer switch is turned down, they just flicker.
Also does anyone know if you can purchase energy saving light bulbs that will work on a dimmer switch?

——————————————

Answer by Prophet 1102
Because they are flourescent bulbs – which require a certain voltage level to react – then it’s all or nothing.

Answer by macroeye
all energy saving lamps, or CFLs are actually compact fluorescent lamps. they do not work on a dimmer and require the voltage specified, usage of a dimmer will seriously damage the lamp & cause it to fail. for usage with a dimmer, only conventional bulbs or halogen ones will work, but if you ask around, dimmable CFL can be found but they are costlier than standard ones as they are fitted with an electronic ballast.

Answer by sensible_man
Dimmable CFL bulbs are available now. More costly though. I think I even saw them at Walmart.
