Question by ed f: which local winds could be most easily harnessed for the generation of electricity by a massive wind farm? —————————————— Answer by JackId say coastal winds are the most reliable. Also the towers do not need to be that large on coast. —————————————— Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!

Question by Steven: Is a wind turbine’s blade speed related to its power output? I’m doing a science fair project on the power output of wind turbines. I had planned to actually measure the power output of various types of blades, angles of blades, etc., but building a system like this seems to be beyond

This is just one of many sites on the web.

Just put in “home solar panels” in a websearch and you’ll get more.
By the way, solar electric power is not cheap. If it were, everyone would have them including the electric company. The time it takes to get your money back from one of these systems can be 10 years or more. Energy conservation is a better way to go.

If you don’t live in a large city, try your county extension agency for references.
Second, other response is correct. Solar recovery costs take a while, between 5 to 10 years depending on quality of panels bought and size of project.
Finally, why not talk to your utility company? Most electric companies now have an energy program that will pay you for excess electricity if you use less than you produce, whether solar or wind. What happens is when you produce more than you use, the meter actually reverses, thus lowering your costs, as the power reverts back to the electric company for use elsewhere. They would be glad to assist you with recommendations and to talk about recovery of costs.
Wind power is a whole different prospect. Aside from its initial high cost, you could run into issues with neighbors who aren’t from the Netherlands and don’t appreciate the aesthetics of a 30′ tall tower near their homes. If you don’t have neighbors, remember that conversion from wind power to electricity involves a whole lot of conversion systems and they take space.
For both, you also have to think about “switching” for when you don’t get enough power from your unit and require it from your power company. I think there is a unit that measures demand and adds from company when you don’t produce enough, and that adds to the costs as well.
Good luck. Wish more people wanted and were able to go greener.

You may want to hold off on buying a solar system for a while….there’s a new technology called thin-cell solar (cadmium telluride and others) that’s being developed which could cut the costs in half to a third of what silicon based solar produces per watt produced. Very exciting possibilities.
