Unplugging them will be just as good as tripping the circuit breaker. However, it may be easier to trip the breaker, as many appliance plug-ins are hard to get to.

Circuit breakers are not made to be on/off switches. You will wear out the breaker and lose any money you saved on energy when it needs to be replaced.

Works for me. The 240 lines are usually dedicated to specific appliances: range, dryer for example.
Problem is replacing circuit breakers is not something a homeowner will probably want to take on…..when they fail from all that on/off. Price an electrician lately?
Remember the 120 lines is they may be sharing with items you might want on….furnace blower, refrigerator, freezer or your alarm clock……
If we are talking TV, coffee pot etc I’d pull the plugs. Even then, just how much are you going to save in electricity….at what point does the hassle of bending over the couch to plug in a lamp get to you? Kitchen, fine, the outlet is right there at the wall, but when you have to start moving furniture, that’s where I draw the line.
Relax, don’t take this PC stuff to heart. I’ve been thru so many PC crises over the years and most are baloney. If you want to lower your electric bill, OK, pull the plug on your TV and computer……two big energy drains. Make sure your lamps are not the touch on/off. Go with windup clocks, adjust your lightbulbs to a lower wattage, adjust your heating and cooling so they don’t have to run as long. Keep your refrigerator coils clean, don’t use the dry cycle on your dishwasher, hang your laundry to dry……..all will contribute far more to energy savings than unplugging your appliances.

You will probably save more energy by turning off the breaker as it will turn off more than you intended to. Good advice on wearing out the breaker, although it will last a good long time using it as a switch, but you will wear it out. Better solution is to get outlet strips and plug your lower current appliances into them, then you just turn the outlet strip off.
