You do save some energy (you lose some through heat generated at the switch). You save even more by using fluorescent lamps but then dimming becomes problematic.

You may save some money but you’ll never see the difference. Very small amount is saved through just dimming. Just turn the lights off when not in use.

incandescent lamps dimmed 25% save 20% energy.
bulbs dimmed 50% last 20 times longer.
dimmers are 99% efficient with only 1% dissipated as heat loss.
