I only turn on my heat, or air conditioner, when I am cold, or hot. I do not set it at a particular temperature. When I am active I tolerate cold much better so I may not need heat until it is low 60′s. The opposite when it is hot, if I am very inactive I don’t need air conditioner until it is in the 80′s. I drive other people crazy this way so you must recognize their needs. There is also a different hot/cold reaction to different humidity levels. I also dress for the weather.

In the winter I only use my wood stove for heat. Of course if I go on a trip I have to set the heat to come on to keep the pipes from freezing.
To get a wood cutting permit and fuel for my truck it costs around $100 and a couple weekends in the woods for a winters worth of wood.

You can use an “electrical energy economizer”, it reduces your bill, if you want, to 100%, uses a basical principle, the electrical meter of your house only detects the active power you use ( kilowatts ), but don´t register the reactive power you can use (kilovars), and so, that device only demand of our electrical grid reactive power and then it convert to active power for aour practical use and so you energy costs go to zero if you want
Here is one of this devices:

Installing a programmable thermostat is a good start.
There are also government rebates you can get to pay for home improvements to make your place more energy-efficient. Check out this site for a list of government rebates:

Hope that helps!
