I am trying so hard to keep my bills down. Would it save much energy if I turned my A/C down to about 74 or 76 and then had my ceiling fan on high in the living room and a circulating fan upstairs? (I live in a smaller townhouse). Or is that defeating the purpose?

turn you air UP to 78, then keep the fan upstairs going to freshen that air, remember hot air rises. Having both fans is a waste

Set your thermostat to 78 degrees and use ceiling and/or box fans, both upstairs and down. The fans will help circulate the air. When you are away from the house for extended periods (2 or more hours), turn your thermostat up to 80. This will keep the unit from running as much while you’re not there, and it won’t take much energy to get it back down to 78 degrees when you get home.

With the AC set at 78 and ceiling fans running, it should be pretty comfortable and save energy costs. Make sure the ceiling fans are pulling the cooler air upwards and spreading it throughout the rooms.

I live in a condo. I keep mine on 76 when i’m home, and 78 when I’m out. I leave a ceiling fan on in my living room and a small fan in the other end of my place. (1 level) I didn’t do this last year but I have compared my bill from this May and last year May, and found that I used LESS energy this year, using the fans. Try it for a month. If you can, go onto your power company’s website and find out last years usage. I live in south florida. I work from home. I use energy efficient light bulbs. My bill last month was $63.00. With a family of 4. (no washer and dryer in unit).Good luck.

Yes, it will save you money. It takes far less energy to power a fan motor (or two) than to run the chiller unit on an AC. You can also run just the fan on your AC unit with the chiller off (just turn the fan switch from “auto” to “on”) this will help equalize the temp througout the house better than ceiling fan could, and still costs less than the AC.
Remember, ceiling fans don’t actually cool the air and usually only affect the room tey are in, circulation-wise. It just makes us feel cooler to have the moving air on us, so you can turn them off when you are not in the room to save even more money.
