Drier air feels cooler than humid air. Also I think that it can cut down on mold and mildew caused by too much moisture. I don’t know if it actually saves energy though. . . maybe it does. I just use one for the above reasons.

It’s much more energy efficient to take the moisture out of the air than it is to cool it. Especially in hotter places like the deep south. Also, while a regular air conditioner makes things cooler it remains humid and can made you feel dragged down and sleepy.
Just remember to empty the water out of your dehumidifier!

The human body sweats to cool off. This is only achieved by the removal of the warm sweat from the body, usually by evaporation. If the air is extremely humid, then evaporation is a lot harder, and so it’s going to feel a lot hotter in the room.
If the humidity is relatively high most of the summer then yes, it will work to make the house feel cooler. As for saving energy, you probably won’t need the air conditioning up quite as high, which saves energy in the long run.

I’ve run a dehumidifier for years and I can’t say it saves energy, but it does keep the house cooler in summer and warmer in the winter and the A/C doesn’t work as hard when the dehumidifier is running.

If you have a central A/C unit it should already be dehumidifying your air. You can even have a humidistat added to your unit to help (if humidity is a problem).
The ‘normal’ dehumidifiers you purchase are very much the same as a normal window mount A/C. Both run room air over chilled metal coils which cause humidity to condense, the window A/C dumps the water and excess heat outside, the dehumidifier dumps water into a container and uses the excess heat to rewarm the air it chilled before returning it to the room.
If you compare energy needs of a dehumidifier and a window A/C unit you will see they are similar.
Just as an example go to the link below and compare wattage vs. dehumidifying rates on GE’s units (listed under product details) and you can see first hand what I’m saying.
