Question by :
Will I save electricity if I run my clothes dryer at a lower temp but for a longer time?

I would think not as it’s heating element is on either way and running it less time would cost less. But to check for yourself, turn it on at the higher temp and go look at your electric meter outside your home. And see how fast it’s spinning. Then turn it on the lower temp, and check the meter. If it’s turning much slower, then maybe it would be cheaper. If it’s turning about the same, keep the temp. higher.

Hi Pete, this is Mike, with The Home Depot.

To answer your question, yes, you can save energy purchase using a lower temperature setting on your dryer.

The permanent press cycle for example reduces the temperature near the end of the cycle to prevent wrinkles. This also saves energy by tumbling the clothes with cool air to finish the drying process.

Try to do multiple loads at once. This will prevent the need for the dryer to warm up at the beginning of each cycle, saving energy.

Also be sure to clean your lint filter after each load. Good air flow speeds the drying process, and saves energy.

Yes, it will save you some electricity, but not much.

There are a few more ways to reduce you dryer’s electric use such as separating cotton from synthetics, using a high RPM spin prior do drying, cleaning your lint filter, using dryer balls etc.

Check out this page for more info on the subject: http://www.best-money-saving-tips.com/lower-electric-bills.html

You can find there lots of other methods to save electricity. And why not save water while you are at it?…
