They save money because they use less power to make them work. They are flat because there is no reason to make them fat, round, or any other shape.

one LED light bulb for home uses less than 1 watt of energy. they are designed differently. look for pictures. you can put them in any shape. and new laws requires street lights to reduce light pollution at night. can you still see the stars? if they are flat, designed in a specific way, they wont light up the sky.
except I heard something about blue light hazard from LED lights. I hope they wont damage anyones eyes.

LED save energy cause they work differently. incandesent light bulbs heat up the filament (the wire) and thats how they shine. for energy efficient lights electric current excites mercury vapor, so then mercury atoms produce short-wave ultraviolet light that causes phosphor to produce light. and LED emit light when the electric current goes through it.
