When they’re not in use, turn off power strips, try getting energy star appliances, including computers, fridges, washing machines, ect…
it pays for itself.
Use compact florescent lightbulbs.. they are also more costly, but pay for themselves.

Do your laundry once a week, run your dishwasher when it is full, comb your hair wet and don’t use a blow drier, turn your a/c thermostat up a few degrees, cook outside as much as possible during the summer, turn everything off when not in use (radio, television, coffee pot, porch light etc), take shorter showers. I am sure others will add to this list.

This is for the summer. Pull your blinds during the day to block the sun and set your thermostat as high as you can live with it. Run a fan to make you cooler. Close off the vents in any rooms you don’t use and shut the door.
In the winter open blinds on the sunny side of the house to let the sun in and close them at night to keep heat in and the cold out. Of course set your thermostat as low as you are comfortable with and when you go to bed set it lower yet. Make sure your weather striping around doors is in good shape. Close off the vents in any rooms you don’t use and shut the door. Get a programable thermostat.
If your budget will allow it make sure your insulation is sufficient and if you have old single pane windows replace them
You can also set the thermostat cooler on your hot water tank and put a thermal blanket around it. Do as much of your wash in cold or warm water as possible and take short showers.
I am sure there are more such using compact florescent lights but I am out of ideas for right now.

Unplug all the AC adapters for your computer, printer & other peripherals, cellphone recharger, cordless phone, iPod recharger, instant-on TVs, etc.
Use your washing appliances only with full loads (dishwasher & clothes washer.) During warm weather, dry your clothes on a clothesline or wood rack rather than a dryer.
Replace your refrigerator with a new model made in the past 5 years – new ones have much better insulation.
Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights, or even better, LED lights.
Install ceiling fans to move air during warm weather and turn off your air conditioning as much as possible. If you need to use AC, raise the thermostat to 78 F. Consider getting an evaporative cooler instead of an AC unit. Have your AC checked for leaks. Clean the cooling coils (do the same for your refrigerator.)
Learn to cook with a microwave oven – much more efficient than electric stove or oven.
Cook meals in large batches and freeze extra servings that you can microwave them later and save a lot of energy that you would use to cook fresh.

Buy energy florescent bulbs for all of your lights.
Turn your water heater off..(if electric)..when you are not at home
Don’t use the dryer when you use the dishwasher..Let the dishes air dry.
If possible put all the plugs in a room on a power strip and turn off when not in use. Plugs in the wall use power even if appliance or lamp is turned off.
Turn computer, printer, etc. off when not in use.
Keep heat or air conditioning cooler or warmer that usual.

I have a closet pole over my washer and dryer. For things you hang, you can take them out of the dryer a little before they are dry and hang them up. It save electricity and ironing. The ironing part is my favorite!
Same thing with the oven. Turn foods off a little before you normally would. They’ll finish cooking with the heat that’s left.
Use one of those swifer things on the floor now and then instead of the vacuum.

Use CFL lamps in those lights.
Don’t use the air conditioner as much,
set the thermostat a bit warmer.
Set your hot water heaters thermostat little cooler.
Insulate the tank.
