In general, ideal to turn of the machine when you are done.
If you want to be lazy, you need to be using the machine pretty much 18 hours + per day to make it worth keeping on.
Therefore, when you leave work, shut the thing down.
After you surf at home, shut the thing down.
Shutting down does other things too
- saves the screen from burn in (using screensavers help there, but all electronics have a limited run life).
- grants the operating system clear its memory so it can run cleaner and faster at boot up;
- grants the operating system to apply regular updates, mainly security updates, which do not happen when the thing is on;
- PREVENTS hackers from taking over your personal when you are not at the Computer – malware will often look for long idle times to activate and hand over control to remote hackers so they can either steal your data, use your Computer to spread viruses, or use your PC/hard drive to store unwanted data like porn.
A federal govt report indicates data centers are the single largest consumers of electrical power – and data centers are full of computers.
Hope this helps.

Shut it down and turn off your power bar. Anything plugged in draws energy. Turning on/off the power is about the equivalent of 15 minutes of power, so if you are away for more than 15 minutes, you should turn it off (obviously this number depends on your system).

Turn on and shut down is better.

Monitors are a huge energy drain – the older and bigger, the more the drain. They can bump up electric bills up to 40% according to computer experts I’ve asked.
Also, I’ve noticed for a few years now that my high speed modems run very hot, even when I’m not online. So I make it a habit to turn them off.
The other thing that is good about making a habit to turn things off is that if you’re a windows user you can also “log off user”.
With all three of the above, you save energy and make sure no one can not only hack into your system, but that no one can access your hard drive without supplying your passcode.

Turn it off, for sure.
Contrary to urban legend… computers do NOT take a massive surge of power to start. It is NOT using 15 minutes worth of power to start a computer. It uses about the same amount of power whether starting or running…
so the question is, how much TIME does it take to shut down and start up? If you’ll be gone for longer than that, shut it down.
It may or may not be worth turning a device off at the power strip. To really know, you’d have to measure how much power it uses when “off”, with something like a Kill-A-Watt https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RGF29Q?tag=wolfharper-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B000RGF29Q&adid=01YKYZANJW59BZZAYBQJ&

Desktops are energy hogs, mine uses almost 90 watts when sitting idle. It definitely saves energy to shut it down when not in use. I have mine on a surge suppressor so when I power it down I flip a switch and turn off the speakers, monitor and printer as well. It helps to declutter the screen as well, the more graphics and icons the more power the monitor uses, many screen savers use more power than sitting idle, so I have mine go to a blank screen.

If you leave your computer on and plugged into the wall all day that will consume a lot of electricity. If you’re not using the computer you should turn it off and unplug it from the wall socket. You’ll definitely save more energy.
You can also use an energy-saving application like Local Cooling, which turns off your computer when you’re not using it:
