turning it off saves energy.

You should turn it off not just to save energy but also it dumps the ‘unnecessary’ bits of memory from different pages that have been retained and will run faster when you restart.

You really don’t want to keep turning your computer on and off, it can mess it up. Put your computer in either stand by mode or hibernate it. And turn your monitor off. Make sure your printer/fax machine and others are off.

I just put my Macintosh to sleep. The expenditure of energy is negligible, but the wear and tear of a powerup on electronic circuitry shortens the life of components.
~*Nikisha*~ is correct.

Yes you save even more when you unplug it after each use.
All electronics/appliance use energy even when they are turned off (but plugged-in), thus, if you leave them plugged-in it is more economical to buy electronics/appliances with the ‘energy’ label.

Generally this would depend on how long you would be leaving the computer on (or off). Modern computers can easilly draw 400 watts or more from the electric supply when operating but drop down to 25 watts or so when not in use for a while.
I t is a trade off between cost of operation vs the “pain” of having to wait while it boots up after being shut down.
In our home, we leave it on during the day when someone may want to use it quickly and shut it down only at night. Most businesses, by comparison, leave their computors on 24/7.
